Afro-Cuban Culture and History

Course Objectives

Afro-Cuban Culture and Heritage is an interdisciplinary course which examines the experiences, influences and heritage of African immigration to Cuba, and the role of Afro-Cubans in the economic development of Cuba. Other topics include studies of  Afro-Cuban religions such as Santeria, music and culture. Class lectures are complemented by study excursions.

Sun., June 3: Arrival and orientation; city tour and reception.

Mon., June 4: Classes Begin: Introduction to Cuba and Cuban history

Tues., June 5:  Cuban history, continued.

Wed., June 6: Analysis of African cultures and their influence in Cuba. 

Thurs., June 7: Fernando Ortiz and "transculturation"

Fri., June 8: The Afro-Cuban Religious Experience.
 

Mon. June 11: Afro-Cuban Religion, continued.

Tues., June 12: Visit to the House of Africa and the Regla Museum

Wed., June 13: Music, cont. 

Thurs., June 14: Afro-Cuban influences in Cuban music, cont.

Fri., June 15: Afro-Cuban influences in painting
 

Mon., June 18: Painting, cont.

Tues., June 19: Afro-Cuban influences in literature

Wed., June 20: Literature, cont.

Thurs., June 21: Afro-Cuban influence in the cinema and other arts.

Fri., June 22: FINAL EXAM in class.

Sat., June 23:  Return to the U.S.
