New Orleans con Sabor Latino is a documentary photography exhibit at the Southern Food & Beverage Museum (1 Poydras Street, Riverwalk Mall) curated, written, and researched by Zella Llerena and edited and photographed by Natalie Root. It celebrates the legacy of the impact of Latino cuisine on the food culture of New Orleans past and present. The exhibit documents the lives and stories of 12 New Orleanean Hispanics from diverse backgrounds. From farmers’ markets to fine-dining restaurants to New Orleans street cart vendors to home cooks, Sabor Latino is growing in New Orleans. As it melds with New Orleans traditional cuisine, a new cuisine is born.‘€™‘€™

Exhibit & Programming Goals
  • To provide a photographic documentation of the Hispanic/Latin population increase in New Orleans post-Katrina and the resulting intermingling of food and culture.
  • To celebrate the past and present Latino heritage in New Orleans
  • To educate the community and visitors in Latin cuisine and how to infuse these flavors in New Orleans dishes via accompanying cooking demonstrations provided by chefs such as Adolfo Garcia throughout the exhibition period
  • To build relationships among diverse communities

About the Curator
Zella Llerena, food curator and writer, is a graduate of Northeastern Illinois University where she received a B.A. in Bilingual/Bi-cultural Education and History. In addition, Llerena attended the University of Toronto where she received her Master‘€™s degree in Museum Studies. Llerena is a culinary historian of Latin American and Southern cuisine. Llerena spent most of her childhood surrounded by a family and extended family of cooks who embody Latin America and taught her how to cook. As a guest curator for the Southern Food & Beverage Museum, Llerena‘€™s work includes; The Culinary Legacy of Tremé, Acadian to Cajun: Forced Migration to Commercialization and New Orleans con Sabor Latino.

About the Photographer
Natalie Root is an alumna of Loyola University where she earned her B.A. in Communications with an emphasis in Photojournalism. A lover of bologna, pepperoni pizza, and chicken strips, she has expanded her portfolio as well as her palate through work with several chefs in Memphis, TN, Oxford, MS, and New Orleans, LA. Her work has been published in several regional magazines. It has also been published in cookbooks, most recently Simply Suppers by Jennifer Chandler released in August 2010. In addition to her editorial and commercial projects, she created New Orleans Fare, a collection of photographs to celebrate the city‘€™s unique culinary culture. Mike and Donna Martin, Isleños (Descendants from the Canary Islands who migrated to Louisiana during the 18th century) from St. Bernard Parish will demonstrate Mike‘€™s mother‘€™s Rice Pudding recipe.
Attend this cooking demo to sample Rice Pudding and learn of the stories of two Isleños growing up in St. Bernard Parish during the 1940‘€™s.

Chef Adolfo Garcia, owner of Rio Mar, La Boca, and A Manor restaurants in New Orleans, Louisiana, grew up in New Orleans as a Panamanian American during the 1960‘€™s. In 2006, Garcia was voted Chef of the Year by New Orleans Magazine.
Come experience Garcia‘€™s cooking demonstration (dish TBA) as he shares his life experiences. Samples to be provided by Chef.

Kid Chef Eliana, author of Eliana Cooks! Recipes for Creative Kids, will prepare her Cajun Cuban Sandwich. Eliana will share her multi-cultural story and discuss her experiences of learning to cook with her Cuban grandfather.
Kid Chef Eliana will also be signing copies of her book Eliana Cooks! Recipes for Creative Kids in the SoFAB gift shop. A must-attend event for the whole family!

Up and Coming Student Chef Roman Castillo of Chef John Folse Culinary Institute will share stories of his life growing up in the French Quarter under his father‘€™s wing, Carlos Zwinglio Castillo, former owner of Castillo‘€™s Mexican Restaurant.
Castillo will demonstrate Shrimp and Grits Cake with Corn Maque Choux and Chorizo while relaying the lessons and traditions he learned from his father, and, most recently, his experiences in culinary school. Don‘€™t miss this exciting lecture and food sampling!

Day of the Dead Celebration: Jack Carrel, creator of SoFAB‘€™s Day of the Dead Altar, will demonstrate the creation of sugar skulls. As part of the traditional Mexican holiday, sugar skulls are created for altars to honor the dead. The sugar represents the sweetness of life, and the skulls represent the sadness of death.
Children who attend this workshop will each get to create their own sugar skulls. Bring the family to this unique cultural learning experience!

Curator and documentary writer of New Orleans con Sabor Latino, Zella Llerena and K-Paul‘€™s professional waiter and poet, Edgar Sierra demonstrate two dishes from the exhibit and proposed cookbook: Plantains Foster and Café Brulot Flan.
Llerena will discuss the development of the exhibit and her creation of Latin/New Orleans fusion dishes for a proposed cookbook. Sierra will share his experiences growing up in New Orleans as a Colombian immigrant, as well as his 20+ years experience at the world renowned K-Paul‘€™s restaurant in New Orleans.

Join us for these interesting stories and delicious samples of innovative dishes!

Workshop and panel discussion of Azul at the Southern Rep Theatre

The Cuban and Caribbean Studies Institute at Tulane University, in collaboration with the Southern Rep Theatre, are proud to announce two events in celebration of the reopening of the Southern Rep Theatre and the spring premiere of the play Azul written by Christina Quintana, a New York-based writer with Cuban and Louisiana roots, and Estefanía Fadul, a Colombian-born, New Hampshire-raised, New York City-based director and producer. In this evocative new play, lifelong New Yorker Zelia struggles to center herself after the loss of her Cuban-born mother. As Zelia digs into her mother’s legacy, she learns of her tía-abuela, the great-aunt who remained in Cuba for the love of another woman. Echoes of the past inform Zelia’s own relationship with her wife and her struggle to place herself between worlds. A workshop with Christina Quintana will take place on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at 4:00 PM in the Greenleaf Conference Room (100A Jones Hall). There will also be a Panel Discussion before the play at the Southern Rep Theatre on Saturday, April 6, 2019.

The 13,000-square-foot former St. Rose de Lima Church on Bayou Road has given Southern Rep Theatre a permanent home, something it had lost since leaving Canal Place. Southern Rep Theatre will be showing Azul beginning March 27 continuing through April 14, 2019. Group tickets will be available for classes or student organizations. Tickets will be available at a reduced price for students, educators and young professionals at the following prices:
  • All student rush tickets are $10 at the door with ID, plus box office fees = $13 (subject to availability)
  • All teacher tickets are available in advance or at the door (subject to availability) for $25 plus fees
  • All under-35 tickets (“young professionals”) are available in advance or at the door (subject to availability) for $25 plus fees

2019 Global Read Webinar Series: Diversity in children's literature for the classroom

This spring, the World Area Book Awards (Américas Award, Africana Book Award, Middle East Book Award, South Asia Book Award, and the Freeman Book Award) will sponsor a free 60 minute webinar on a book recognized by one of the awards and facilitate a discussion with the author on how to incorporate the book into the classroom.

The 2019 Global Read Webinar Series will focus on the theme diversity in children’s literature. Each webinar will feature a presentation by an award-winning author with discussion on how to incorporate multicultural literature into the classroom. The books are appropriate for students in grades 7 – 12. Please read along with us this spring as we explore the world through these award-winning books. We encourage all readers to join in on the conversations each month and ask the author your own questions live.

Middle East Book Award
The first webinar of the series is co-sponsored by the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University and the Middle East Outreach Council. The webinar will explore the book, The Map of Salt and Stars by Jennifer Joukhadar, winner of the 2018 Middle East Book Award for Youth Literature. The Map of Salt and Stars is part cartography, part poetry, and part call to action. The gripping narrative interweaves the journeys of two strong and intelligent female protagonists: Nour, a Syrian-American girl escaping the violence of the civil war, and Rawiya, a 12th-century girl who dresses as a boy to become apprentice to the famous mapmaker al-Idrisi. Beautifully written descriptions of Nour’s synesthesia help us understand her experiences in new ways.

Africana Book Award
This month’s book award is sponsored by the Africana Book Award. Please join us in learning more about the book, When Morning Comes by Arushi Raina. This fictionalized account of a student uprising that began in Soweto, South Africa, on June 16, 1976, unfolds through the first-person narratives of four young adults from different backgrounds whose lives intersect. An African student, Zanele, secretly organizes the protest against the Afrikaans Medium Decree Act, which required the use of English and Afrikaans (“the language of the oppressors”) in schools. Her apolitical friend Thabo heads a local gang, extorting money from an Indian store owner, whose daughter Meena, is sympathetic to the students. Meanwhile, Jack, a white Afrikaner, meets, befriends, and comes to love Zanele.

We will explore the book, Lucky, Broken Girl by Ruth Behar a 2018 Honorable mention Américas Book and winner of the 2018 Pura Belpré award. In this unforgettable multicultural coming-of-age novel – based on the author’s childhood in the 1960s – a young Cuban-Jewish immigrant girl is adjusting to her new life in New York City when her American dream is suddenly derailed. Ruthie’s plight will intrigue readers and her powerful story of strength and resilience, full of color, light, and poignancy, will stay with them for a long time. Additional support generously provided by Florida International University, Tulane University, University of Florida, University of Texas at Austin and the University of Utah.

Freeman Book Award
Join the Freeman Award for an evening with author Alan Gratz and his book, Grenade. It’s 1945, and the world is in the grip of war. Hideki lives on Okinawa, an island near Japan. When he is drafted to fight for the Japanese army, he is handed a grenade and told: Don’t come back until you’ve killed an American soldier. Ray, a young American Marine, has just landed on Okinawa. This is Ray’s first-ever battle and all he knows is that the enemy is everywhere. Hideki and Ray each fight their way across the island, surviving heart-pounding clashes and dangerous attacks. The South Asia Book Award highlights the work of Mitali Perkins with her work, You Bring the Distant Near. Five girls. Three generations. One great American love story. Ranee, worried that her children are losing their Indian culture; Sonia, wrapped up in a forbidden biracial love affair; Tara, seeking the limelight to hide her true self; Shanti, desperately trying to make peace in the family; Anna, fighting to preserve her Bengali identity.

All sessions are free and open to the public. All times listed refer to Eastern Standard Time (EST). Now, in its fifth year, the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and the Cuban and Caribbean Studies Institute at Tulane University are proud to announce the return of our annual two-week summer educator institute exploring the geography, culture and history of Cuba. For an educator, Cuba is rich with lessons to bring into the classroom. This program highlights the important historical and cultural connections between the United States and Cuba. Participants will explore key sites and meet local experts and artists who will provide unique insight for educators who teach such subjects as U.S./Latin American Relations, World Geography, World History, and Spanish among others. Come and visit the site of the historic Bay of Pigs, explore Milton Hershey’s sugar plantation and hear firsthand about the Cuban national literacy campaign from the teachers themselves. In collaboration with The Hershey Story, The Museum on Chocolate Avenue.

THE PROGRAM INCLUDES:

  • Lodging at Casa Vera (double occupancy)
  • At least 1 meal a day (at Casa Vera and on excursions)
  • Transportation to/from airport to residence (if you arrive on time)
  • Medical insurance: Each participant will be covered for the entire program length by a travel health insurance policy.
  • Group tours and excursions, with associated transportation

THE PROGRAM DOES NOT INCLUDE:

  • Airfare to/from Miami: approx. $300-$600
  • Visa: $50-$100 depending on airline
  • Checked luggage ($25) + Overweight baggage: This constitutes anything in excess of maximum allowed luggage weight (50lbs), both going and returning from Cuba.
  • Communication: Internet and long distance/international calls
  • Additional meals (1 a day, snacks)
  • Taxi/ground transportation: Participants are responsible for expenses incurred getting around town during free time.
  • Admission to museums, events, etc.: Participants will be responsible for these expenses unless they are part of itinerary.
  • All materials and personal expenditures
  • Loss/Theft Travel Insurance: Please note only travel medical insurance is included in program. If you would like additional coverage (including insurance for loss of baggage, emergency cash transfers, etc.), it is recommended that you purchase additional insurance.
