From the New York Times: Professor David Smilde co-authors opinion article on recent negotiations in Venezuela

Abraham F. Lowenthal and Tulane University sociologist and Venezuela expert David Smilde recently contributed an opinion article to the New York Times. In the article, Smilde comments on the preliminary talks between representatives of Venezuela’s government and the democratic opposition. In the opinion piece, the authors note that in order to achieve a durable transition from authoritarian rule to democratic governance, both parties should exercise strategic patience. This strategy, however, “can be a hard ask of Venezuelans, who are experiencing widespread suffering and displacement.”
